Common Dashboard Lights & What They Mean

All vehicles are equipped with a sophisticated computer system that’s programmed to alert you if it detects something wrong. If you turn on the ignition and notice a warning light, it’s important to bring your vehicle into Dickerson Automotive as soon as possible for an inspection. Depending on which warning light illuminates, a major issue can progress quickly and lead to an unexpected breakdown. It’s important to pay attention to the dashboard warning lights because not only do they keep you safe, but they prevent automotive failures and their expensive repair bills. Below are the most common dashboard warning lights and what they can indicate:

  • Oil Pressure Light

The oil pressure light is an image of an old fashioned oil tin and indicates an issue with your vehicle’s oil pressure system. If this light illuminates, your car may be low on oil, or the oil pressure is low. This light alerts of a problem that should be addressed as soon as possible. A car engine can wear quickly without proper lubrication from the oil.

  • Battery Warning Light

The battery warning light indicates that there is an issue with your vehicle’s charging system. Battery issues can include a damaged or loose battery that causes electrical problems and dim headlights. However, not all illuminated battery lights may be due to your battery. Sometimes the battery light may appear due to issues with your alternator. If you aren’t sure what the problem is, bring your vehicle in, and our experts would be happy to help inspect and diagnose any battery issues.

  • Tire Pressure Light

The tire pressure indicator is an image of the TPMS symbol. This light signals that one or more of your tires are at an unsafe tire pressure that can damage your vehicle. Your vehicle’s owner manual gives you guidelines for how much air pressure your tires should hold. It’s also important to keep the weather in mind. Your tires will naturally contract or expand depending on the weather, and you may need to keep that into account when filling them.

  • Anti-Lock Brake Warning Light

The “ABS” warning light indicates that there is an issue with your anti-lock brake system. The anti-lock brakes ensure your vehicle safely stays in contact with the road.

  • Engine Temperature Warning

This light can appear for a variety of reasons but primarily indicates that the engine has overheated. There’s a possibility that the issue involves your coolant level. The moment this warning appears, it’s best to have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible to avoid engine damage.

  • Check Engine Light

A vehicle’s check engine light can appear for a variety of reasons. This light can illuminate due to simple reasons such as a loose gas cap to more severe reasons such as an engine misfiring. If the check engine light starts repeatedly flashing, stop driving immediately, and consult an expert.

These warning lights listed above are some of the most common indicators you may experience. If a warning light illuminates or you suspect a problem with your vehicle, please don’t hesitate to stop by Dickerson Automotive or give us a call today for assistance.
