GM Power Steering Recall: What You Need to Know

General Motors (GM) has announced a recall affecting approximately 26,847 SUVs from the 2021 model year due to a software issue that may cause a sudden loss of power steering assist. This issue can make steering more difficult, especially at lower speeds, increasing the risk of an accident.

Affected Models:

  • Cadillac: Escalade, Escalade ESV
  • Chevrolet: Suburban, Tahoe
  • GMC: Yukon, Yukon XL

What’s the Issue?

The software defect can cause the power steering system to stop working either when the vehicle starts or while it’s in motion. When this happens, the driver will need to use significantly more force to steer the vehicle, particularly at lower speeds, which can be dangerous. If the problem occurs, drivers may hear a warning chime and see a malfunction indicator light on the dashboard.

In some cases, restarting the vehicle may temporarily restore power steering. However, GM advises vehicle owners to address the issue as soon as possible.

How to Fix the Issue

GM is offering two solutions to resolve the problem:

  1. Over-the-Air (OTA) Software Update
    • Owners can download a software update remotely to fix the issue without visiting a dealership.
    • The process may take over an hour, during which the vehicle cannot be operated, and certain features like door locks and windows may not work.
  2. Dealership Software Update
    • If owners prefer, they can visit a GM dealership, where technicians will update the software for free.

No Reported Accidents or Injuries

GM has confirmed that, as of now, there have been no reported accidents or injuries related to this issue. However, the company is urging owners of affected vehicles to complete the software update as soon as possible.
